Chapter Twenty-Three

Saturday morning, Aubrey woke to bright sunlight and a slight hangover. Nothing like drinking herself into a stupor. There was the old Aubrey before Ulrich, who’d never sought out alcohol or other mind-altering drugs to manage her emotions. Then there was this new Aubrey, one she didn’t quite recognize. One she didn’t like all that much. Not that the old Aubrey was much to celebrate.

She moaned as she rolled onto her back and shoved her pillow over her face to shield her eyes.

“About time you woke up.”

Mr. Meow, her cat, jumped on the bed and for a few ridiculous seconds, Aubrey thought he was the one speaking.

Her heart hit overdrive and she bolted upright, then relief flooded her when she found Leah sitting cross-legged on the carpet, an open book on her lap. Aubrey’s journal.

Aubrey sighed as her adrenaline settled. Leah had no understanding of social boundaries. “I’m not even going to ask,” she muttered as she threw back her covers and got out of bed, yanking her journal out of Leah’s hand on her way to the bathroom.

Leah leapt to her feet to follow, but Aubrey slammed and locked the door.

“That won’t keep me out!” Leah called.

“Go feed the pets!” Aubrey muttered as she checked her journal. It wasn’t really a record of feelings or a tale of woe, but almost every night, she jotted down the events of the day.

“That’s not my job!” Leah sniped.

“You seem to be able to come and go at will, which leads me to think you’ve got a key to my apartment. And if you’ve got a key, that means you’re a resident. Residents in my apartment are required to feed the pets and make coffee.” Then as an afterthought, added, “And pay their share of the rent.”

She didn’t quite catch Leah’s grumbled response, but it faded as the crazy one left the bedroom. Aubrey stared down at her journal. Effing Leah.

She did her business, washed up and dressed in holy jeans and a faded T-shirt with an A emblazoned across the front. It had belonged to her sister and it was one of a dozen things of Adrienne’s that she couldn’t bring herself to part with.

In the kitchen, Mr. Meow was sprawling on the sofa licking his paws, Fake Goldie appeared intact, and two steaming cups of coffee and an open jar of raspberry jam were on the coffee table in front of the couch. Leah was in the kitchen buttering toasts and humming a tune that sounded vaguely like Eye of the Tiger.

“Here you are!” Leah exclaimed as she carried the stack of toasts into the living room along with two plates, two butter knives, and a spoon for the jam, all of which she set up on the coffee table while shooing Mr. Meow to the floor.

“Wow! You’re a domestic goddess,” Aubrey teased as she sat down on the sofa.

Leah grinned and parachuted her herself onto the other end. “I know!”

Aubrey grabbed one of the toasts, spread jam on it and bit into it.
